Our Third Season’s Submissions

Are Closed.

Wanted:

Choreography Proposals

Deadline: April 10, 2011

Rules and Details:

1)Three black cubes will serve as the only set pieces, and they MUST be used in each submitted dance piece.  They may not be removed from the stage during a dance piece.  They may be stacked or arranged in any safe and sane way (i.e. they may represent a pillar or a park bench).

2)Proposals must be submitted by e-mail to blackboxblackblocks@gmail.com or on paper to the Kennedy Theatre office no later than April 10, 2011.  For e-mail, PDF and RTF format attachments are preferred.

3)In your proposal, please explain what you wish to achieve with your piece, how you will use the blocks, what music you plan to use, how many dancers your piece requires, what stylistic elements you plan to incorporate, etc.

4)There is no defined minimum time, but the maximum performance time (including set-up and clean-up) is 20 minutes.

5)  No singing or speaking is permitted in any dance piece unless the music and lyrics/words are 100% new and original.

6)All pieces will be sharing one lighting grid.  Lighting effects should be kept simple.  Also, only limited sound equipment will be available, and recorded music is preferred.

7)Final selections will be made by a panel of graduate dance students.  It is encouraged that you be present to defend your proposal at this panel (dates and times will be announced in Spring 2011).  You will be contacted promptly thereafter and informed as to whether your dance will be used.

8 )You may furnish your own dancers or choose from dancers in an audition that will be held in May.

9)Choreographers must be available in the summer months to direct their pieces, should they be selected for presentation.

When are the dates for the Black Box, Black Blocks performance?

I am trying to get a piece choreographed by Marie Takazawa, a graduate of the UH Dance Program who went on to dance in Broadway with greats like Yule Brenner and Nurevev.
The dancers joining her in her piece will all be graduates of UH…

The dates are important as Marie has many obligations with Ballet Hawaii, Honolulu Club, Dance Central etc. etc.
